A perfectly painted wall is something that many people take for granted and often assume it is an easy process until they try it. There is more that goes into wall painting other than dipping a brush in paint and applying the paint to the wall. While many people attempt small painting projects with a DIY approach, it is always better to deploy professional painting services on larger projects. Regardless of the size of the project, there are a few tips that can be used to achieve perfect painting results.
Wall Painting Preparation
An old wall will develop cracks, holes, and dents over time. Walls along high traffic areas like the hallway will also accumulate dirt and grime over time from contact. The wall surface should be repaired before any attempt at applying paint. For cracks, dents and holes, a mixture of mortar should be used to fill the gap before sanding to make a smooth level surface.
Dirt and grime on the wall can be washed off with a mild detergent. Stubborn stains can be removed using a bleach solution, or industrial grade bleach for oily stains. Allow the wall to dry completely.

Wall Painting Materials
While a ladder comes in handy in reaching higher surfaces, consider using a telescopic pole. Some of these poles can extend to 18 feet. For wall painting a standard 9 feet wall, a pole that extends 18-36 inches is adequate.
Instead of using a paint tray, use a 5-gallon bucket with a paint grid. This is a sieved screen that hooks on the lip of the bucket. After dipping the roller in the bucket, roll it against the screen to take off excess paint.
Applying Primer To The Walls
While it is smart to apply a primer every time you paint, it is mandatory to prime the surface of a new drywall, or when painting a dark color. A primer helps the paint adhere better to the surface, which prevents peeling and blistering. A primer is tinted by mixing a small amount of the top coat paint.
Protecting Other Surfaces
Many people will opt to lay plastic covers on the floor. Canvas is a good alternative as it is rip resistant, and will readily absorb paint, meaning it is less slippery.
Consistent Wall Paint Colours
If you have to use several cans of paints for a large surface, mix all of them in a 5-gallon bucket and stir well. This way, you have an even tone.
Storing The Wall Paint
For a project lasting several days, you will need to store the paint and brushes such a way that the paint does not dry. Wrap the brushes in plastic and store in a cool place. Close the lid tightly on paint cans to prevent air getting in.
